The End Of Induction Week

It has come to the end of the second week now, and its been a week full of inductions and settling down. We had the library induction at the start of the week and it was interesting to find out how much they actually have, all of the normal books as you would expect, but also DVDs and a back catalogue of a very large selection of magazines and journals which I think will be very helpful in the next three years, I'm looking forward to taking a trip down to the library and having a look for myself in the other building, as the one in the Blenheim walk site is closed at the moment.

We were also shown the PC facilities and given our passwords so we could use them in the college, it was nice to see all the software that we should get a chance to use. We were also given our new email address' and a tutorial on how to use the PC and MAC suites.

At the end of the week we were given our brief for the next project, I'm really excited to start it and get stuck in now. The brief  looks really good too, by the end of it we will have made a garment from a found image which is very exciting to me, making a pattern and figuring out how it will all go together to make it look exactly like the image we had found.

We had a little go on the industrial machines as well this week, which was fairly scary to begin with! they go really fast! although I'm sure it will become easier the more practice I get. We also were shown all the different machines and what they do, all the over lockers, I particularly liked to three thread one, or the roll hem over locker, which is a lot softer stitch and is used for underwear and on fine fabrics like Georgette. Also the cover stitch machine, which adds a finish to things like jersey t-shirts, the blind hem machine, the twin needle machine and the bar tag machine. There are also machines that specifically make button holes, and key button holes, there is even a machine that covers buttons with fabric too. I didn't know that there would be this many different machines here! I cant wait to get to use all of these and see what I can achieve.

First week as a BA fashion student at LCAD

This has been a busy week! The start of my university life, well i must say I was a rack of nerves the first morning but it didn't last long at all. I couldn't believe how nice all the people were, students and staff, and how easily we could all talk. Freshers week consisted of a few things to help us all get to know one another; we all participated in a quiz one morning which was really cool, we got to know what each other knew about a lot of things.

There was also a trip to Manchester which i particularly enjoyed. It really brought us all together trying to find our way around a strange place (although we had a little help from a native!) I really enjoyed the Mathew Williamson exhibition at the Urbis. I felt i got a lot out of seeing his work and I managed to take a few photos. I think a lot of his work was relevant to my summer work too, on layers and tears as he used a lot of silk Georgette layered up.

We also took a look around the back street parts on Manchester, looking at the vintage shops in the Afleck centre and we found a really good fabric shop too called Abercame, it was quite cheap too!

on the first day of the second week at uni we were all given a little quiz for us to do which would give us an insight on how we learn. We had to guess this and make a graph on how we each thought we learnt as individuals, and then we were to take to test and re-do the graph with accurate results. I actually think i did a good job at guessing, it turns out i am mostly a visual learner, and work equally well, but I'm guessing it depends on the circumstances, alone and in a social group. I think this will help me a lot actually, knowing how my brain works and how to get the most out of it.

I must say I'm looking forward to the rest of my time here.
